People all around the world adore ASIMO, our advanced humanoid robot designed to someday assist people in their daily lives. ASIMO plays a valuable role globally in encouraging and inspiring young people who are interested in careers in “STEM” — science, technology, engineering and math.

Still, even those who’ve had the pleasure of meeting ASIMO and seeing it in action (walking up steps, running, hopping, serving treats to guests) might not know the full story about how the 4ft, 3in. tall, 110 pound robot came about…

Today’s ASIMO is the result of nearly three decades of dedication by Honda scientists and engineers.

ASIMO — whose name is an acronym for our “Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility” — was first dreamed up way back in 1986. That’s when Honda associates first proposed creating a humanoid robot that moved and walked just like a real person. Soon after, Honda dedicated a team to do just that.

The challenge to create a humanoid robot was enormous. Over the next decade Honda engineers focused on developing legs that could simulate the walk of a human and technologies to give the robot human-like balance.

ASIMO made its U.S. debut February 14, 2002, when it rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Honda Motor Co., Ltd. listing on the NYSE.

Since then ASIMO has undergone many refinements as Honda continues to advance the robot’s capabilities. Today ASIMO continues to travel the globe to amaze and delight people of all ages.

Of course, at Honda we never stop dreaming and building a better future, and we’ve never stopped improving ASIMO, from expanding its range of mobility to increasing its running speed. For example, in 2014 ASIMO learned to communicate using sign language.
ASIMO continues to thrill people in all parts of the world. ASIMO visited the Big Apple and got to see New York City in all its glory.

ASIMO Visits the Big Apple

During a visit to Honda in Silicon Valley, Honda engineers shared with students their personal experiences and reasons for pursuing a STEM-related career. The students – who are part of the City Year program, a learning and enrichment initiative supported by Honda – also watched a demonstration of Honda Robotics technologies, including ASIMO and UNI-CUB, the Honda personal mobility device.
