Devonthink Omnifocus

Reference material is a big challenge, and I find if I don’t set myself up for success from the beginning, then I am most definitely doomed to fail. I found DEVONthink some years ago and really like it for managing my reference material.

I realized a while ago that creating a place to store material related to a project when I create my project is critical—if it doesn’t happen then, when will it happen? As I have a strong tendency to reach for my iPad or my iPhone rather than a Mac, I solved this problem with a little help from Shortcuts and X-Callback URLs!

When you import the shortcut, it asks you for a DEVONthink destination. I keep all of my project material in one database, so I used that as my destination. You could also use a group – or remove the destination components entirely to put everything in the global inbox.

Rapoo driver download for windows. When you run the shortcut, it asks you for a name, you can cheat and add lots of names though (use a return to separate them), and it will run through each item.

For each one, you can choose if this is a project or a task. For projects, the shortcut automatically creates a group, and for a task, you get the choice of markdown, text, or a group.

Integration

The shortcut creates the DEVONthink item first, then creates the project or task in OmniFocus with a link back to the DEVONthink destination in the note. It’s a simple system but works well for me!

Linking OmniFocus and DEVONthink

Virtually anything in DEVONthink can be linked to OmniFocus projects, action groups, and actions. This linking can be performed manually or through automation. Conveniently, links work across Macs, iPhones, and iPads. You can also include links to OmniFocus projects, actions, tags, and more in your DEVONthink database, allowing for two-way linking between these two apps.

Here are a few examples that demonstrate some of the ways that OmniFocus and DEVONthink can be linked together. For even greater convenience, consider using Hook for Mac to create bi-directional links between OmniFocus and DEVONthink. You can even use Hook to automate the process of creating a new OmniFocus action based on whatever’s selected in DEVONthink. Similarly, Hook can create a new note in DEVONthink that links to whatever you have selected in OmniFocus. Sigma designs port devices driver.

DEVONthink has a well-deserved reputation for being an automation-friendly app. The following video shows you how to use the “Add as To Do to OmniFocus” AppleScript that’s provided with DEVONthink. Specifically, an OmniFocus action is created with a link to the selected mind map. Clicking on the link opens up a preview of the file. If you wanted to make changes, you could launch the mind mapping app (MindNode) with a click or tap. You can use this script as-is or modify it to serve your needs.

Example 3: Linking OmniFocus and DEVONthink on iPad

DEVONthink is also right at home on the iPhone and iPad. In addition to making use of links that were added to OmniFocus on the Mac, you can use the iPhone and iPad apps to create links that work across all of your devices. In this short video, you’ll see how to create an OmniFocus action that references a mind map stored in DEVONthink.
